BLOG TOUR: "Embrace" by Jessica Shirvington

Today we have a special blog posting for all you fans of Angels! "Embrace" by Jessica Shirvington which comes out March 2012, is stopping by today, and disusing how Angels have a "pecking order"! I think you'll all really enjoy the research and lore of the Angel's, and also how Jessica artistically incorporates it into her book, "Embrace" (review to be posted later today).

Angels Have A Pecking Order
by Jessica Shirvington
Researching for EMBRACE, I discovered the entire subject of Angelology to be truly fascinating. In the end, I chose to go with the most popular theory, that there are 3 choirs of angels and within each choir, 3 ranks.

At the top of the angel hierarchy sit the Seraphim. They are the angels that are supposed to burn with an all-consuming white flame and who perform the all-important role of maintaining the source of Existence within the physical world.

Following the Seraphim come the Cherubim, and Thrones. I always like the descriptions of the Thrones – bringers of justice.

In the second choir are Powers, Dominations and Virtues. And in the third choir – Principalities, Archangels and Angels (guardians).

In writing EMBRACE, discovering each of these ranks and their purpose on earth was what led to the development of my characters powers. Each character is specifically placed within a rank of angels and then given powers accordingly. For example: Griffin is parented by a Seraph angel, meaning he is a leader and his unique power is a mind power (that of reading and delivering truth) to correlate with the description of the Seraphim’s function in the universe. It is a great way of keeping order to the power pool!

Each angelic rank also has a different appearance and different color that represent them and I found this really interesting. Any time I describe an angelic image, it relates back to this research in some way. Additionally, combining this research with things like the Chakra has led me to the use of color as a representation of power and also gemstones as a link to old mythology. For example: Phoenix’s hair is like opal – so black that it shimmers with purple and it catches the light exposing streaks of dazzling silver. First, I loved the idea of his hair being different, but also, it linked to the significance to his power, and his heritage in the story.

Basing the story around the bones of angel mythology and hierarchy gives me a solid structure to use as my foundation. It anchors the story and gives me direction any time I think the story might be straying.

Also, it allowed me to develop one of the big mysteries within the series: what rank is Violet from?

Awesome right?! Maybe it is just the history student coming out in me, but I thought this was SUCH an interesting post, and I loved the insightful-ness of Jessica's research and just everything! Be on the look out for my review later on today and I DO apologize for the lateness of this post, I was having technical difficulties with the internet & then my laptop :|

Have you heard of: "The Opposite of Tidy" by Carrie Mac?

Not quite a review but my thoughts on how "The Opposite of Tidy" is going to deliver a never before view into how teenagers lives are not always their own. That sometime's their lives are controlled by outside sources, and that lying is the only way to have any control in the chaos of their life.

"The Opposite of Tidy" by Carrie Mac
Publication Date: April 10, 2012
Publisher: Penguin Group

Coming out April 10, 2012 by Penguin “The Opposite of Tidy” by the award-winning author Carrie Mac will enlighten readers of all ages to the world of hoarding and how it not only affects the parents but their children as well. I have yet to read “The Opposite of Tidy” but have been hearing nothing but good things from fellow bloggers & book lovers. I wanted to do a little write up about what I think about the subject material before I read & review the book, and also the cover love I have for this book!

One of the subjects that are touched within the book is that of Junie’s mother’s hoarding, and also her father’s absence due to his relationship with another women. Both are huge topics with today’s generation although hoarding has become something reality TV has publicized with shows such as “Hoarders” on TLC. I can speak from experience that hoarding can be an embarrassment & toll on teenagers especially keeping them from a social life. One of my stepparents has OCD & causes them to save every scrap of paper they get – we have newspapers in our basement from 1985 … although that being said, they do manage it … sometimes. I feel that a lot more teenagers go through things similar to that of Junie nowadays as well, not just Hoarding or OCD. Sometimes our living situation can be different, and trying to fit in at school can be hard – when mixing the two you get a situation such as Junie’s where she needs to end up lying to make sure she can keep her home life a secret. When that starts to happen of course the lies start to pile up, and when is enough enough?

“The Opposite of Tidy” tackles this question and many other situations as Junie, her mother, and her friends start to come to terms with everything that has happened, and the lies that are told. I personally think this book will be extremely enlightening to the average teen about what problems some teens face, and that not everyone is just “shy” or “weird” or a “loner” - that perhaps “judging a book by its cover” is never the route to go when in High School no matter how popular, but also lying is never the route to take as well. Both very valuable lessons when in high school but also when you grow up as well!

On that topic, THE COVER! I am such a sucker for a beautiful flowing dress, or attractive men on my covers, but this time around “The Opposite of Tidy” delivers the reality of what the book is going to discuss! I love the bright bold lettering, and the cowboy boots on top of the giant mess. The catch phrase as well “How do you come clean when your life is a mess?” I find to be absolutely perfect! The cover is simplistic yet eye catching with the mess, and bright colours, perfect for the cover collector like myself.

So there you have it! My thoughts on “The Opposite of Tidy” and how Carrie Mac will be delivering a thought provoking young adult contemporary read that will open your eyes to hoarding, and how it not only affects the individual but also those around them.

Cover Reveal: "Pretty Amy" by Lisa Burstein

Well my lovely book obsessed followers, it is another sunny but cold Monday morning and I have a beautiful cover reveal for you! "Pretty Amy" by Lisa Burstein is due to hit the shelves from Entangled Publishing on May 15th, 2012 - and today we (along with multiple other bloggers) are going to unveil the pretty cover for "Pretty Amy" along with a fun giveaway Entangled Publishing will be hosting the upcoming weeks to Lisa's books publication date!

Pretty Amy by Lisa Burstein
Publisher: Entangled Publishing
Expected Publication: May 15, 2012

Amy is fine living in the shadows of beautiful Lila and uber-cool Cassie, because at least she’s somewhat beautiful and uber-cool by association. But when their dates stand them up for prom, and the girls take matters into their own hands—earning them a night in jail outfitted in satin, stilettos, and Spanx—Amy discovers even a prom spent in handcuffs might be better than the humiliating “rehabilitation techniques” now filling up her summer. Worse, with Lila and Cassie parentally banned, Amy feels like she has nothing—like she is nothing.

Navigating unlikely alliances with her new coworker, two very different boys, and possibly even her parents, Amy struggles to decide if it’s worth being a best friend when it makes you a public enemy. Bringing readers along on an often hilarious and heartwarming journey, Amy finds that maybe getting a life only happens once you think your life is over.

Thoughts: This cover is exactly what the title says, pretty! I absolutely cannot get enough of the cover! I LOVE the prom dress and how it is exactly what you would imagine a prom dress to look like, big, poofy and princess looking! lol Every girl wanted that stunning unique dress at prom so sometimes you took unique over simple, and elegant! Also, I love the background of the cover, it gives the illusion of an old fashioned jail house, and seeing as the three girls end up in jail for one night it suits the book perfectly! I dont think I have ever seen a cover that fits the titles and synopsis so exquisitely as Pretty Amy's does! I also adore how the cover and authors name isn't taking away from the cover, it isn't overbearing but still noticeable, almost like graffiti on the wall - makes the books cover very unique and different from most covers out there. What do you all think?
